Cairo International Airport is an international airport located 22 km northeast of Cairo, with an area of about 40 million square meters. It is considered the main air gateway to Egypt, and is the second largest airport in Africa in terms of air traffic after Cape Town Airport in South Africa. The airport represents about 40% of Egypt’s air traffic and is connected to 91 airports around the world through various airlines
The airport currently has a capacity of 22 million passengers annually, and is used by more than 60 airlines from different countries of the world, ten air cargo companies, in addition to charter flights, and is managed and operated by Cairo Airport Company. The airport was named Africa’s Best Airport for 2006 by the African Airlines Association through a survey conducted by the Association on the development of African airports in terms of performance, infrastructure and continuous modernization
The importance of the airport has increased, especially after EgyptAir joined the Star Alliance and turned Cairo Airport into a hub airport linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe, in order to collect transit passengers and take them to all airports in the world. The airport has three terminals (Terminal 1) with a capacity of 6 million passengers/year, Terminal 2 with a capacity of 3.5 million passengers/year, Terminal 3 with a capacity of 11 million passengers/year, in addition to the seasonal terminal with a capacity of two million passengers/year, as well as four runways for take-off and landing of aircraft.
